Novalja is the most important
touristic centre of the island Pag. It is situated 21 kilometre on the
north-west from the town pag and it counts 1915 inhabitants. It was named after
the ancient Romans, because Novalja was one of the Roman ports. At that time it
was one of the bigger places connected by the aqueduct to Kolani and by tunel
to old Novalja. In the 12th century the church of the Mother of God was bulit
and it was being built on the bases of the two previous churches. The
St.Catherine church was also built on the remains of the previous church. In
the chapel of our Lady ruzarica there is a picture of our Lady who shed a tear
in 1534 according to the legend. Near the church there is u museum in which the
remains of the cultural heritage of this region is being kept.
