Ston is 53 kilometres far away
from Dubrovnik towards north-west and it has about 580 inhabitants. Ston
consists of two fortified settlements of Veliki and Mali Ston. They are joint
by the great wall that connects the peninsula with the continent. This wall is
pentagonal shaped. The fortification called Veliki kastilo served as a wheat
and ammunition repository. In the shallow bay at the back of the Ston canal
there are salt pans. They brought a great profit to Dubrovnik Republic. In
Veliki Ston the offices of Dubrovnik Republic were built, and also the
renaissance court, the count court, the town faucet and the gothic cathedral
that was knocked down by earthquake and on the place of which there is a parochial church of St.Blaise. The
Franciscan monastery is on the west side, and it was built in the middle of the
fourteenth century. Mali Ston is famous by its breeding sites of bivalves, especially
oysters. The St.Michael church is placed on the hill on the west side from
Veliki Ston. It is famous by the preserved frescoes. The St.Nicholas church
keeps numerous artistic objects.
