Ploče is a town and port on the
strand of the Neretva Canal. It is the youngest town of the Adriatic. The port was built in 1937,
and after the Second World War Ploce became one of the largest ports of the
Adriatic Sea. Not far from Ploce there are Bacinska Lakes (Crnisevo, Klek,
Sladinac, Perast and Sipak). The curious thing is that, even though sea is very
close by, the water in lakes is frashwater. The true attraction for the
visitors is the traditional race of boats from Neretva – it is a marathon race,
22 kilometers long, that starts in Metkovic and finishes in Ploce.
