Polace is situated on the
northern side of the island Mljet, 3 kilometres from Veliko jezero. In the
village there are 115 inhabitants today. It is the most beautiful and the
biggest port of Mljet. The name of the place Polace originates from the ruins
of the Roman palaces that left in the place. This palace was once a cottage,
and today it is called Vila Rustika, When Benedictines came to the settlement,
they did not permit further colonisation, so the settlement became extinct. The
place started to enliven again in the sixth century. In Polace there are the remains of
middle-christian basilica that resembled the Solin basilica.
