Makarska

The town of Makarska is situated under Biokovo, in the center of the coast, with its 11,743 inhabitants.  Two smaller peninsulas, St Peter and Osejava, are surrounding the town of Makarska. In the ancient times here was the settlement called Miccurum, which was a bishops'  (episcopal) center.  In the medevial times Makarska was the center of the Principality of Neretva. The town was under the governance of the Bosnian banuses, and later it was ruled by the Turcs. Makarska was also the center of trade, as it was very well connected with Split, Rijeka and Trieste.  The monument of Andrija Kacic Miocic is on the town square of Makarska, together with the Baroque church St Marco, with marble altar and silver altar of the Lady of Ruzarje. Today, Makarska is the tourist center and the favourite destination for many tourists.
