The island of Mljet
The island of Mljet is situated in southern Dalmatia, 30 km northwest of Dubrovnik. Length of the island is 37 km, a width of 3 km. Mljet is the eighth largest largest inhabited island of the Adriatic I with an area of about 100 km2. The island Mljet is the southernmost
island, and in 1960 the island has been
proclaimed a national park. In its 13 settlements today there are 1237
inhabitants. It is famous for its pine
and oak woods. The most famous part of the park is Veliko and Malo jezero
(Grand and Small Lake). In the middle of Veliko jezero (Grand Lake) there is a
small island called St.Mary, on which there is a benedictine abbey with a church. Along with numeorus amphibians, reptiles and
birds, mediterranean monk seal lived on the island, too. Mungos helped that no
viper lives on the island no longer anymore. The island Mljet was annexed to
Dubrovnik Republic in the fifteenth century.
Daily links the island to the mainland by boat line Dubrovnik - Sobra - Dubrovnik, which runs from Dubrovnik at 9 am, and from places on the island of Mljet Sobra in 17 hours. The island of Mljet is the greenest Adriatic island, a third of the island on northwestern area, where there are places Polače Pomena, West Hollywood, Babine Soline home and declared a national park 11th November 1960. It represents the first attempt to protect an original ecosystem in the Adriatic. This miraculous island with its diverse flora and fauna and a National Park with two salt lakes to the Great and Little Lake.
The island is also known for his monastery founded in the 12th Mljet century in the 14th century became part of the Dubrovnik Republic.
